Engine Oil Level
Hi,
I was looking through the service section on the car, and noticed the oil dipstick was at half. I had my oil change done 3K ago, and i have a 530xi with 70K. When i had my oil change done, the dipstick was full. I was told thats it normal for this car to burn oil, but it seems alot for just 3k miles
Should i add more oil eventhough it says engine oil level is ok, or should i wait till it says add x Amount of oil?
Thanks,

Nothing to worry about yet, just add oil when it gets to the minimum level or at the quarter mark to put your mind at ease. Never overfill it though.
OOO ok, thanks for the quick reply.
I also had a litle problem yesterday. After i left work, i was driving down hill with my foot on the brake, and all of a sudden the car RPMs just jumped to 4K. Once i saw that i put the car in triptronic and shifted to the next gear.
Any idea what would have caused the car to do that?

Did you have the cruise control on? If so, that may explain it. The cruise is designed to downgear on a steep hill in order to maintain your speed. I use this feature on hills where radar traps lurk to catch 'speeders' coasting down a hill.
If cruise wasn't on (you mentioned foot on brake) then I have no idea what it could have been.

Yes, wait until it tells you to add one quart of oil:
"Oil level at the minimum! Refill with 1 quart of engine oil. Add 1 US quart/liter of engine oil at the next opportunity."
Also, keep in mind that the gauge shown on the iDrive represents only the oil level within the top quart ... so for your engine it shows between 6 and 7 quarts. And it does take a bit of driving before the electronic dip stick will recalibrate once you add fresh oil ... be patient.

I don't have this on my car and have never even heard of this? Is it on 04's or just newer years?
