Engine oil decreases every 2000 KM.

Hello I Owen 2006 525I. Every 2000 KM I have a message on the display saying add I liter of engine oil. BMW local dealer says it?s normal. It seems to me very strange something is wrong.

Your advise and help is highly appreciated.

Thanks,

i am not really sure but that doesnt sound good i think.

if it was an M car then it would be normal but i dont think that this should happen to a 525.

My opinion that this has to do with how the brake in was done. Leaky piston rings might be the problem for this big oil consumption. It's not normal for a 525 to drink that much oil.
My advice is to take the car for an engine inspection.

Thanks,

my 503D used 1L of oil in the first 5,000 km.

Since then it has used none, last oil change was 18,000 km, it is now on 29,000 with no measurable oil use.

Yours does not sound good.

a friend of mine had a 06 or 05 525i, the new 218hp engine...
it seemed to do the same the car remained with him for a long time...just over a month. he got the car a minimum level. and we added 1 liter, this got the car over its minimum level but it was still low, soon after about 2, or 3 weeks that leter was gone, about 2000km or 3000km of driving...
thought that car really had something wrong with it, perhaps a ruber seal leak,,,
now that BetterMakeWay mentioned it, it was a loaner so i dont expect it got much of a break in,,,,
but that much is definitely not normall...nor is it acceptable...

The dealer told me when I picked up the car that the car will need 1-2 pints of oil very quickly (within 1000-4000 miles), but it should not lose any more.

I can see the need for the oil in the first period as parts get worn in. Some other car makers schedule a 1000 mile check up (e.g., Saab) to intentionally change the oil after the wear in period (and to cover all customer complaints). It is good customer relations to catch all things that are going wrong. BMW does not do this.

Best,
