Never seen that msg, but I do know that you need to drive for a few miles before accurate oil levels can be read. I think the manual says something like this too.
Why don't you just check the oil level using the dipstick?

545i is the only engine that have a dipstick to check engine oil.
Other engine doesn't have the dipstick so we need to check it through the iDrive screen.
So no matter how long you drive I don't think you'll be able to check it because at start up, our screen will say updating oil information and a few minutes later it display the oil level.

In the service menu ther's an item call engine all check . After clicking the screen says unable to check oil at this time. Does the car have to be cold for this feature?

I believe the engine oil check varies with the cars age.
My 2004 530d has a dipstick and the engine oil screen on the idrive just records when it needs to be changed.
The way this looks changed when I had my software updated.
However, I looked at a friends car (he had nav by the way) and his had an electronic dipstick.
Anyone know when this came in ?

IIRC, the electronic dipstick is only on the petrols.
Doesn't apply to the diesels, which all still have the good old mechanical solution.
