engine number on e60

greetings,
trying to register my car(2006 525i) and i need the engine number. not the vin. found where they said it was and got a 7 digit number. went to motor vehicles dept. and they said it should have more digits. i am sure it was only 7. checked on my friend who has a 2008 525 and on his registration he has 8 digits. WTF?? anyone know how many numbers a e60 engine number has? and does it vary by the year? mine is a 2006 out of japan (ie. rhd)
