545 owners, I have a problem and need some feedback. I've had my '05 545i in twice now for an annoying engine noise under load that sounds like a knock/tap. It happens hot or cold, and while not very loud, you can hear it under low radio volume. The dealer service department is telling me this is normal. Anyone else experience this problem? I'm thinking of taking the car back as I noted this problem the day after I bought it just a month ago. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

I get the tapping noise under load when the motor is cold. Do a search there are posts about this. Some folks had new lifters installed or other engine work. I'm concerned the cure (tearing down a factory assembled motor) might be worse than the problem.

Like mhs525 said... I'm concerned the "cure" is worse than the actual problem... I guess time will tell.

What about engine mounts or transmission mounts? Have not had this on my e60, but did have on another car.

Actually, while I will run that SIB by my service advisor, I get the same noise hot or cold. After driving 40 miles, I had the service manager ride with me and he noticed the noise as well. The traveling BMW service expert had it this week, and while the noise is there, he stated it is normal. I'll also run the idea of the lifters by them and see what they say. I also get rough idling, sometimes shaking the car like I'm being hit bby 45 MPH cross winds.
