On my 2005 545i when I am sitting at a light, my idle tends to get rough every now and then, has this happened to anyone else? Is it just a typical hiccup with all these computers etc. maintaining every system of this car? Let me know!

I have had exactly the same experience with my car 2004 545i. Although engine shudders, it seems to go away after driving for a bit. I guess this is a common problem on the 4.4L engine.

I was on a roadtrip with my 545i recently, and sat in dead stop traffic for about 3 hours (ugh!). I had three others in the car with me. There were several times when I felt like someone in the back seat was thumping their feet, or otherwise shimmying around, but nobody was. Turns out it was the engine. I gave it a little blip in neutral and it stopped.
Weird.

Did you ever find a resolution to this problem? I just had a re-re-reprogramming, CCC replacement (for other problems) and blahblahblah done... car was in for two weeks. I got in the car, idling in the service bay, and it was thumping away, rough as ever. The SA got in, said, "yeah, I feel that". He called on his tech, and they gave me some BS excuse that went something like this:
"Well, these aren't Cadillacs (duh) with the engine floating on big fat soft engine mounts. BMWs are higher performance cars, and the engines are rigidly mounted to the chassis. That's why you feel everything." He gave me some fuel injector cleaner "just in case" and off I went. I was happy to have the car back after driving an X3 for the last two weeks.
Sigh...

I have the same issue with my 2008 528i. I just got it back from service for this issue (alongside other minor ones) and at first the service rep said they ran all the computerized engine diagnostics and everything was OK. I wasn't satisfied with this and asked to speak with their head tech so that he can sit in the car (right after the service) and feel the rough idle for himself. He did so, and admitted that the idle was "more noticeable than normal" and this was further confirmed when we sat in another 2008 528i that didn't have such a rough idle.
End result? They'll be sending in all the data they've downloaded from my car up the food chain to see if BMW North America, then Germany has any resolution. I have another appointment set for Jan. 11, 2008 to see if they've received word for a fix to this.
PS -- Merry Christmas and All the Best for 2008!

My 525 has a slightly rough idle sometimes too. Just a slight vibration. I told the dealer and he said he didn't feel it. It was not however thumping. This is my first BMW and I thought the straight six was suppose to be VERY smooth.
