I have hear my car pop & crack after a hard drive. Mostly when brand new. I certainly wouldn't describe it as exploding noises. I think mine was the exhaust system and heat shields. Not the engine. It seldom does it now.

It's the differential contraction of the various bits cooling down.

Just thought- do you US guys have Imprezas?
