Is it rough on a clutch or transmission to downshift when coming to a slower spot in the rd or at a traffic light?

Not if its done correctly. If you rev match then there should practically be 0 wear on the clutch.

Engine breaking put more strain on the transmission, there is no doubt about that. It just depends how high the RPM's spike...I would never shift down into 1st if I am going any faster than like 10mph...just puts unnecessary strain on the car.

The mini doesn't have a whole lot of torque so it puts even less strain on the car, as long as you rev-match its absolutely fine..just don't go all the down to 1st unless your going real slow...

There's just no good reason to do it. I'd suggest just using the brakes.

Slowing down to a spot but not stopping is a very good reason to downshift, you dont want to be hunting for the correct gear if you need to accelerate out of a situation.

+1 R&R the brakes is a lot cheaper than R&R transmissions.

On the track drivers use the brakes to slow down and downshift to be in the proper gear to accelerate after braking - not to supplement or replace braking to slow the car.
