I couldn't find anything on this so maybe i'm just too picky about my inside lighting. I keep the instrument lighting turned down as far as I can and still be able to see it. Problem is the red emergency button doesn't change brightness and I find it very distracting when driving at night. Is it supposed to dim with the other lighting inside the car?

I have a 2007 530i, which I've owned for about 2 months.

 

Not sure if yours interior lighting is too strong but this very button needs to be seen whenever you need it ... so it's better to leave it as it is ... my 0.02

 

huh? I think you're too picky, and its pretty dangerous if you don't have any light source during a night driving IMHO. Maybe you can try to unplug the cable that goes from the battery to the car's interior lighting, after that you wont have any light whatsoever inside the car JK man

 

put a smoke/clear sticker over the buttton.

 

I would think the light would dim with the rest of the interior lighting. I can see all the buttons fine. I don't remember any of my other cars having such a bright button, even my previous 325i.

 

I want to find the emergency button in a hurry when I need it: wildlife encounter on the road, stopped/slowed traffic ahead on the highway, etc. A bright emergency button is also handy for those who drive / own multiple cars. Hop from an E60 to another BMW, MB, Audi, Lexus, etc to see how quickly you can locate the emergency flasher.

 

Since I use to work on a tow truck sometimes I switch off many of them when the car is loaded.
But on many cars it takes me a minute to find the button, even when it's on!

I'm sure you've discovered lots of features and functions on your e60. Hope you never have to use that emergency flasher button in the future. Since it's out of my line of sight it isn't at all distracting; since it seems to be annoying for you maybe as suggested a piece of tint film would make it less obvious for you during normal driving.

However, and I'm sure you are wellaware, if in a state of shock or confusion that may follow an accident, that is perfectly obvious to you now could become oblivious. That said, one of the additional features of a BMW is that the emergency flashers are automatically activated under certain crash conditions.

Are you saying your light on the button doesn't dim at all? I'm also one that always dims the instrument lighting and I'm pretty sure my hazard button dims with the rest of them...

 

+1 on the emergency flashers automatically activated. I have never noticed if the buttons dims with the rest of them, but if it doesn't dim I can see how that would be distracting.
