Electrical System Malfunction - Continued Driving not Possible

my car once said "catastrophic system malfunction. Car will self destruct in 15 seconds" i thought to myself "oh my god, i am going to die" then i remembered it was a BMW and that the error was probably a mistake. i hit the menu button on the i drive to clear the message and held my breath. 15 seconds later i was still fine.

scary thing is on these new bmws the only actual control you have is the steering???
the car can select the gears and throttle
