Thumbs up E61 530d engine not getting hot enough!? Please help

Hi guys, I have done lots and lots of searches and came up with the problem about the thermastats and EGR

I had the EGR thermastat changed today and the mechanic confirmed that it was stuck open, so I was exctied to try it out on the motorway again and yet again it flirts between 75-80 degrees C

Strangly though when you floor it from say 40mph, the temp drops drastically from say 78 down to 60 degrees then when you reach say 80mph it goes climbs back to 78-80 degrees

Might book it in for the main thermastat i guess it would be unusual for it to be both stats gone no?

Worse case senario though guys, what if the main one is done and still no change, where do I go from there??

Please help because it is worrying me, my DPF filter must be getting a good hammering because it is not getting blown out as the car is not getting hot enough, every time I blast the car, it is as clean as a whistle behind me!

help me......

I have beer and cigars......lol

Sometimes you are lucky and it's just the EGR thermostat - but generally they both seem to age together and both need replacing. It's rarely anything else.

Hi Jason, I'll get it booked back in and get the main Stat done too, hopefully that should sort it all out.

Thanks again

If you change the main and it still doesn't get up to aeound 89 - 90 deg then look at changing your heat exchanger transmission oil cooler, there is a thermostat in it which also is prone to failing.

You should be getting up to temperature (90 Deg) in around 5 miles. Your mpg will likely improve somewhat too as all the time it is under temperature it will be running rich.

Have a look at this thread. Coolant temperature? - E60/E61 2004-2010 - BMW 5 Series Owners Board

Well a little update for you .....

Changed the EGR filter it was indeed stuck open but new stat had no effect and it still ran at 75ish.
Dropped it off again for the main stat to be changed, seemed to look ok but he changed it anyway.

Well I just tested it and we have it running at a nice steady 95 now :-)

Result!! and my 24 mile trip in and out of work no longer yealds an average 22mpg on the computer it now returns 42!!!!!

WOW

:-)

Chuffed

Thanks chaps

Super advice

Just out of interest where does the hidden menu it get this temp from can this temp sensor be faulty??

the breakdown again was It was running 75-80 degrees originally as above

First job was to de flap the car, did that pretty much right away.

1. Switched them out, EGR was apparently stuck open, so changed it engine still ran cold at the same temp.
2. Changed the Main, from all accounts it was in working order BUT a new one installed cured the problem 94 degrees warmed up quick and was fine for a few weeks !!! RESULT happy days!

Been running it fine for weeks now and threw in some Redex fuel additive last week and problem must have started around
then, i also did the gearbox reset trick ie first click, hold accelerator pedal down gear changes now super slick no more jerking from 3-2-1 so been driving like a champ.

Been driving totally fine, my wife has used it all week and I had the wheels change to 19's at my local garage.
On driving home i put my foot down to realise it was powering up to 60mph but then no boost no power it was like I had
50Bhp in total...really strange.

She has only been doing the school runs so not sure when this actually happened as she does not get above 25-30mph over the space of 3 miles so she is never really pushing it.

I checked the engine temp too out of interest more than anything and it was 65-70 so EVEN WORSE!!! ARGH!!

Took it to a BMW Specialist in basingstoke where were superb, guy plugged it in checked the faults and there were plenty on there, we took it for a spin, low boost, MAF errors, fuel line errors injectors a little unpredictable but ok, he confirmed it was in limp mode, said some of the faults could have been the other garage when they changed the EGR stat, MAIN stat and de flapped it.

He checked the DPF and said it looked fine.
Suggested maybe changing the fuel filter when I use all the redex diesel and plug it in again to see if any other errors have come up.

Cleared the faults, tried a forced regen, nothing much happened, car drives beautifully but fuel economy is a little low still and it has been about 3 days, no more limp mode drives great BUT engine temp is now low again.

It climbs when stationary, no problem but as soon as you drive the temp drops like a rock to low 60!!!

Can anyone advice as it is driving me nuts, seem to have lots of annoying problems, just want it to behave properly its a lovely car.

Thanks guys for those that read it, sorry for the slightly depressing 2nd post here haha

Hope anyone can shed a few lights on it or had something similar after changing the stats, thanks to those that posted before it you seemed to hit the nail on the head but it seems to have reverted back now?

Possible bad stats?
