Default e60 wheel well contents

I pulled out the wheel liner and examined the components in the wheel well.

Check out the Evap filter.

How many of you are replacing this filter?

Does it have a 4 year lifecycle? 10 year lifecycle?

When I received the 2a16 fault code recently (evap micro leak), I went searching for what was triggering the CEL.

I ran the ISTA evap test module with the car NOT running.

During the test, ISTA activated the dtml pump in the right rear of the car for about a minute or so doing a few test. However, ISTA didn't come back with any results that could be helpful.

During the test I could smell gas near the drivers side door. What I just figured out right now is, that gas smell has to be coming from the gas ventilation valve connected to the intake manifold. The valve is under all the electronics which is at the bottom of the intake manifold.

If gas smell was coming out of that ventilation valve, that might be telling us that is where the evap leak is located? Or maybe that is just part of the ISTA test and gas vapors are supposed to leak from that area?

I had the same error a few years back changed the valve and line and problem was solved.

When it happened to me I would get the code and clear it a few weeks later it would come back. I eventually changed it no problems since

Let's talk about how you changed the gas ventilation valve.

It appears you have to do the entire job blind because you can't see under the intake manifold. You just have to feel around and:

- unclip the electrical harness
- unclip the two vacuum lines
- pull off the ventilation valve from a bracket that it slides into?

Is there any magic to removing the ventilation valve?

Let me think. If I remember correctly I didn't change the pipe from the valve to under the manifold. The valve is held on by a rubber slip. Pull it towards you ( should be towards the drivers side) and unclip while hanging. Then reinstall. It should be self explanatory after you slide it off. The part running under the manifold I did not bother to change out since it was the valve that was bad

Correction now looking at the picture I didn't change the long pipe. The short pipe you should be able to unclip with ease. Let me know if you have an issue. I could be wrong. I know one side I didn't change
