After reading a couple of threads about weight I looked up my E60 and my wife's E46 touring.

I was surprised that my E60 is actually lighter than my wife's car; 1670kg Vs 1700kg.

I then looked at the E90 (saloon) and E91 (touring) both 325d M Sports, for comparison.

The E91 is 1675kg while the E90 weighs in at 1610kg.

The new M3 coupe is 1655kg. An E280cdi saloon is 1715kg.

The 550i and 535d M Sports come in at 1735kg.

(All figures are based on standard models with no options.)

So comparing saloons, the E60 is only 60kg heavier than the equivalent E90. In other words. the weight of a very skinny passenger - or my two youngsters.

Considering the size difference, this seems pretty impressive to me for a large car.

Regards,

Yep, I agree, it's amazing how many people just assume that the E90 is much lighter than it is. The E90 doesn't benefit from the most weight saving that BMW engineered into the E60 (aluminum body panels etc).

Keep in mind the e90 is not all that much smaller these days compared to its big brother. Yes the e60 gets weight savings but aside from a little bit of interior room and trunk space they are not a heck of a lot different in size these days.

+1 .
Anyone know why is the LCI models is slightly heavier than the pre-LCI model? Could it be due to the new transmission?

Sorry, I have to disagree, I think that it is a lot bigger.

I chose a 5 series precisely because it is bigger than a 3.

In terms of interior space - especially for rear passengers - there is a big difference IMO.

The boot (trunk) on an E60 is much bigger too.

The 5, is over a foot longer and 8 inches wider than a 3.

And especially if you compare the tourings. The E91 boot is a joke, more like mail slot.

Enough said. The 5 does feel bigger than the 3 no doubt but it is decieving is what I am saying. Just look at the numbers. Not a lot there different people. The 5 is much wider in the cabin SEEMINGLY because the 3er slopes in a lot more starting in the dash where as the 5 feels wider but even the actual cabin is not all that different.

Here are the interior dimensions. And the trunk is 12 cubic feet vs 14 in the 5. I was surprised at the size of the 3 series trunk.
