Just got a smoking deal on a new-to-me super low mileage 2008 535i, this is my first BMW so when I came across something in the trunk that had me scratching my head, I thought I would ask the experts here.

There is a door flap (of sorts) on the left in the trunk. It opens to nothing and I can't seem to understand what this was put in there for. Any insight?

 

Mine has that too, but there's a pocket in behind the flap. I suppose you could put your 45 in it.

 

I have the same thing, has anyone cut the area out behind the flap?

Not sure what else would be needed, but mine has a metal bracket for the 'oddments tray' too.

 

No pocket or cutout behind mine, as its pretty flat. I imagine you could cut it out but the 'oddments tray' would confine the amount of storage.

Not to get off topic, but I was also wondering what the pseudo keyfob is for in the back of the glovebox.

 

MIne opens to nothing too, just sheet metal and wires.

I believe the pseudo key fob is the Valet Key. Not sure how it works..but my understanding you pull your key out of the fob, put it in the fake fob and hand it to the valet and that way you still have your key fob...and I hear there are valet settings that limit the rpms so they can joy ride. Not sure if that enables that function.

 

Just carpet behind my flap, the only thing I could think to put there is paper...like a golf scorecard or the like. Idk

I'll have to do some experimenting with the pseudo keyfob, I image you are correct, if you were to put your key from the real keyfob in there, I suppose that the valet could put the keyfob in the "ignition" slot there to start the car but not sure. I've only had this thing a week so still learning.

 

There should be a hard-plastic box the size of a CD player behind the flap. I use it for carrying small tie-downs. Zoom in on the pic and you'll see the tie-downs sticking out. The inside panel (and door) was removed for body work from my 2010 accident.

 

The plastic key fob is for the plastic key that you have and is for valet, like mentioned earlier. I keep my plastic key in my wallet in case I somehow lose or lock my keys inside the car.

 

That would make sense, I wish I would have taken a picture of mine, unfortunately now I can't for a couple weeks as I'm out in the Gulf. It is literally just a carpeted flap, which opens towards the rear of the car (hinge is vertical). Upon opening it, it is recessed enough for the flap itself to lay flush when closed, but otherwise, no pocket or room to store anything. As I mentioned somewhere above, it is carpeted under the flap as well.

I wonder if someone forgot to cut it out and add the box behind mine...crazy
