Wonderful write up! It looks a little too risky for me, but that sure will help a lot of people. You really notice a big difference? I just got my E60 and it's got high mileage on it and the tranny shifts a little rough in DS mode, I think I need to get this done.

DIY is all ready to go but the system would not allow me to post something with this many images. Darn!
I will get in touch admins.

WOW. Nice write up. So don't change my ATF at 80k?

A little too much work for me to DIY.

I think the shifts are a little crisper. Hard for me to tell because I don't drive the car everyday. It could just be a placebo effect.

I feel better knowing that I did it at 75k. My initial feeling after looking at fluid was that it it didn't look too bad. After further investigation of the pan magnets, I found sediments/extremely fine metal shavings on them. I am going ahead and doing a drain and fill this coming weekend to get rid of most of the remaining oil.
It's something I believe in but everyone has to make their own decisions. I feel better knowing that its done. Only time will tell if I made teh right decision. It's only been a week.
Regards.

Can anyone advise on the best way to measure the fluid temperature when doing the change, ZF seem pretty certain it needs to be around 40C.

Stick a baking thermometer in the fill hole, just don't let your wife catch you!

I borrowed a friend's VW/Audi diagnostic tool when I did this on my previous A4 (had a ZF 5 speed auto). I watched how the temps increased on the transmission fluid and saw that based on room temp of 70deg F, it took approx 5 mins for fluid to reach fill temp of 40deg C.
To make things easier, I just bought the BMW diagnostic that will allow me to monitor transmission temps among other things. I plan to do a drain and fill this coming weekend. It will be a good time to test the theory on a 6 speed auto. I will post results so other can benefit without needing the tool.
Regards.
