I went round to visit the folks at the weekend to discover that my dad has traded in his E60 530d for an ex demo 730d Sport. He hasn't been entirely satisfied with the 5 since the day he collected it 7 months ago. The 7 was registered at the same time as his 5, has nearly all of the toys on it and only 7,500 miles which is less than he had done in his 5.

I took it out for a quick spin to see how it compares to the 5. The interior quality is much better but some of the controls take a bit of getting used to. The i-drive system in the 7 is infuriating as it has no menu button. The voice control system however is excellent as is the professional navigation system. It does feel like a big car on the road though, unlike the 5 IMHO, and the active steering is a bit strange on first use. Overall I'd give it a thumbs up and if the dealer had another ex-demo in the right spec I might even be tempted myself.

Isuk, I do not think the 7 series has active steering. Active steering debut in the E60 and will be included in the 7 series later this year from what I read.

You're probably right about the steering. The 7 does have some sort of system fitted though as the steering is very light at low speed but firms up considerably as you go faster.

Interesting to read your father not entirely satisfied with his E60 5

I have the same issue with my 525 and am in the process of negotiating a buy back from my dealer.
I think my car may be a "one off" with problems. But after driving an E60 530d with active steering , DSC and a few other toys I told my dealer to keep my car (politely) and left it there! They are very understanding of the situation and will do what they can to help.
Shame as comfort etc not an issue. Just handling, gearbox, steering etc etc etc.
I even like the look of the car!

See what next week brings. In the meantime use my sons car!
