I?m having a few issues with the tyre wear on the rear of my 530i.

The inside edge (and I?m only talking the first inch or so) of the rear drivers side (right had drive car) wears out very quickly compared with the rest of the tyre.

When I bought the car it was on the 18? M-Sport rims with the run flat tyres. The rears still had about 4mm of tread left on them when I upgraded to 19? 172?s but to my horror when I removed the rears to change the tyre it was through to the canvas on the inside edge. I?d only had the car for a few months at the time and was lucky that the tyre hadn?t blow out. As its right on the inside edge you can?t even see the problem when the car is sat on the road.

I fitted my 19? 172?s and have had them on about a year now (covering about 10k miles) and the same is happening again. Took the car in for an MOT and the guy pointed out that the inside edge is badly worn (despite 95% of the tyre having 4-5mm of tread on it).

I?ve had the car checked for 4 wheel alignment and it is all perfectly as it should be which I just can?t understand. The guy at the tyre shop said he has seen at least 2 other 5 series the same, including an E61. There is clearly something not right here, especially as its just on one side and isolated to the very inside edge. It?s that extreme that I originally thought it would have to have been something like the inner arch rubbing the tyre to cause the wear to be so localised but there is no evidence of this being the case.

Has anyone else seen anything like this before?

Stock alignment comes with a lot of negative camber which make the car corner aggressively . The problem is that you give up tire wear. Have the car aligned to eliminate some of the negative camber and run your pressures on the rear at 39lbs. Either way, if your really enjoying the car, 25k on rear tyres is all you can expect.

Yes, I have had the same.

I took it for 4 wheel alignment and there was too much negative camber on the rear but more importantly loads of toe in on the rear too. I wasn't running run flats, and have replaced with non-runflats again.

I have seen others with this. Take a look at any of the BMW forums and you'll soon realise it's pretty much part of the 'ownership experience' of mainly 3 and 5 series BMW's but particularly when fitted with 19" alloys with runflats.

I know you wear out more cause of the neg camber on the rears, but I dont think ive heard of it being so excessive on the one side..Dont take this the wrong way, but are you a heavy set guy? Im not an expert, but maybe that can have something to do with it? Or maybe your camber needs to be adjusted/fixed which ive seen done before somewhere, I think, lol. Whatever it is im sure someone with more knowledge with me will be able to shed some light.. Mel

Rear camber is -2, so you'll get a bit of inside wear. Really shouldn't be excessive, though.

Yeah but he's down to the "canvas"! Might want to check those spokes - maybe the wood has started to rot from moisture.

My tyre pressures are fine, check them regularly. I am aware that the BMW runs negative camber so you would expect a bit of inside where but this is far in excess of anything you can imagine.

Fiona, thats exactly what my first set of run flats looked like when they came off the car. Looks like we were both lucky not to have blow outs but the latest set of non run flats are doing the same. Think I might try a different tyre place and get the alignment checked else where, it just can't be right as it's only one one side?

Oh and BTW I only weight 160 lb so probably not that either lol.

It was too much neg camber and toe out on the rear (from new) which caused our (Fiona & mine) tyres to shred to the wires on the rears. Check tyre pressures regularly, run standard tyres slightly higher pressure than the runflats and keep checking the inside edges. Had these tyres failed (and they were just about to) I would have lost both my wife and babies.

rear tire wear is bad, but shouldn't be THAT bad on a 530 as opposed to a V8 car. I'd have a specialist take a look at the rear suspension, particularly ball joints, and any rubber under there. I consider myself lucky if I hit 15k on the rears, but they wear evenly across.
