There is a way to display engine temp.
I have done it. I was amazed.
I had found a youtube video that showed how to do it.
Unfortunately I have not found how to make it permanently appear!
To me a temp gauge is an invaluable tool, and if you had an electric water pump let go on an e60 you would know why!
I can't understand why that stupid mpg vacuum gauge trumps a water temp gauge!

The bmwhat app can show temp or voltage I believe.
There are some after market gauges. This one plugs into the USB port: BMW E60 Gauge Kits and Data Acquisition | Turner Motorsport
Also you could get a usb charger w/ voltage meter that plugs into the cigarette lighter. A temp gauge sure would be nice though. Don't see any way to add that
