If I go and open a door or the hood, I hear a buzzing noise coming from the engine compartment. It lasts a couple of minutes. What could it be? It has done this since I bought it this summer. Sounds like it is waking up - it isn't a loud noise just a faint buzz / hum type sound.

These cars make lots of buzzing and whirring noises....various fans and pumps waking up, or going to sleep. Normal!

I have an 04' 530i with SMG. Is this normal and what could be making that sound? Wife thinks the car is alive.

Also the led light next to the shifter stays lit for awhile after closing the door. Is this normal too?

I had the same question and was told it's when anything electrical is working. Normal though, no worries..

I believe this is normal as well, at least it was the same with my E39 AT.
I can't fully confirm now as I have a MT.

Your wife is right, it takes a while for these cars to fully go to sleep after you get out, some have said 15-25 minutes.

Yes, this is completely normal, my car does it all the time.

Well then there's your answer. That buzzing noise is your SMG pump working. It operates every 30 seconds once the vehicle is turned on. This pump is what makes the gearbox fluid circulate through the system.

The LED next to the shifter will stay on until the car completes its shut-down cycle (about 20 minutes).
