In September 520d does not only receive the updated 177ps engine but also the new automatic transmission. Worth waiting...
Has this all been confirmed yet? I know the 120d has already received the updates and it's going to happen but I haven't seen anything to confirm the transmission cut-over? The regenerative stuff isn't there yet either!

Like I said, avoid for the short-term...

The Comfort seats are definitely worth the extra money.
+100
The comfort seats are outrageous. I can't sit in my wife's Lexus anymore.

Heikki,

I am not sure you are correct there with your ref to the new "fly by wire gearbox" being available on the 520d when the new engine is available (Sept 07).

Can you tell me where you got that info please?

Also, I am not sure that it will ever have the engine and gearbox combination as when the new 177ps engine was fitted to the face lifted 120d, the old gearbox is an option and not the new one.

Very interested to here more from others as I too am very interested and am holding on for sept for the new 177 engine, and would sloa love to get the new auto in it also. Great MPG, great CO2, cant wait if it is true!!!

My dealer "warned" me about the possible new engine up-grade in September '07 but said the new auto-box was not yet a certainty. The car rags are into it but nothing is yet official from BMW itself.
As the price here in Portugal is due to be "up-graded" yet again in July by another 2000+ Euros for the 520d (happy Mr. Taxman), I decided not to get so anal about the whole thing and to order my 520d as it is with 163 bhp and then get a chip-ECU re-map which will allow me the same sort of power as the 525-530d while maintaining good fuel economy. Heck the E61 520d here in Portugal is going to set me back 67,000 Euros - mostly in tax so why give them anymore.........? This way I'll start enjoying my E 61 NOW.
Still, if, like in the States your Beemers with high capacity engines are relatively inexpensive compared to countries like Portugal and Italy where an E 61 535d automatic will cost you around 82,000 Euros (111,000 USD without extras), then I too would opt for a bigger engine but in this case, at least a 530d. The new 525d now seems kind of like a de-tuned 530d.

Sorry if my questions are dumb,I'm new to this.I'm wondering does the 2008 520d automatic have the 'new auto-box' referred to above? Also are 08 520d manual and auto equal as regards economy? Thanks in advance.

Hi,

yes the current 520d have the new automatic tranny. And yes, the auto does consume marginally more than the manual version but this consumption is worth the comfort. The new tranny is awesome - fast shift times and relatively very economical. The other reason why i took the auto and not manual was because the 520d does not allow you to drive in low revs with athe manual tranny - everything under 1500 revs causes the car to brmmmm (basically that is the noise). The automatic just does not allow this to happen...

the auto is worth the money!!!!

The BMW website has all this detail... Yup, 'new' 'box:

The 520d manual (auto) is 55.4mpg (50.4), 136 CO2 g/km (149) and 0-62mph of 8.3s (8.4).

Had my 520d Msport Auto for 3 weeks now and covered 1800 miles. I have been running it in and not going too hard max 75-80 no hard acceleration. Fuel consumption at 45mpg mostly motorway driving. Round the doors about 41mpg.

The engine speed is at around 2200rpm, which is a bit higher than i would like for cruising, but very peaceful.
