Morning all, great forum you've got here . I hoping to replace my E class later this year with an E60 520d Sport and would love to get some advice from you knowledgeable folk.

Firstly, my local dealer tells me the engine has upgraded (from March 07) from 163bhp to 177bhp. I've looked on the web but not found anything on the BMW websites - can anyone confirm the new specs, especially torque (existing 340nm IIRC)

Secondly, should I go manual or auto? From LCI brochure the 520d auto is the thirsiest diesel BMW sell, while the 520d manual is the most frugal! I'm guessing this is down to the rest of the range getting the new auto transmission and "high efficiency" engine with the smart alternator etc while the 520d auto is old school?

Thirdly, for the Sport, option 470 - front seat isofix and airbag disable is now only available as part of 459 - full electric seats, a ?800 odd option! (pre-LCI 470 used to be a ?60 option!) Is there any way round this by any chance? If not, and I have to spend the ?800, would I be better off going for the comfort seats which are a couple of hundred more? I see the comfort seat has even more adjustment, and if I'm honest I've not been very impressed with the standard sport seat. Anyone have any experience of the comfort seats?

Sorry for all the questions guys but I'm a bit stuck, and you know what BMW sales people are like!

As I understand it, the 520d engine is indeed due to be uprated from the current 163bhp to 177bhp, but I was under the impression that this isn't due until September this year - others maybe able to confirm, I'm quite sure 520d's currently rolling off the production line will be 163bhp.

The same engine is fitted to the 1 series and I believe this did infact receive the uprated version from the current 163bhp to 177bhp in March this year as part of the 1 series LCI facelift. Seems strange to me that they have fitted the uprated engine in the 1 series but not yet in the 5, maybe they are holding back to allow the new 525d to become established before the door is closed in terms of power gains between the two?

Hope this helps.

The current 120kW (161HP, 163PS) engine will be replaced from Sep 07 production with a 130kW (174HP, 177PS) engine.

Just looked on the BMW website, the 1 series has the 177ps engine. Torque is 350nm. I guess they need to pin it back otherwise it'll poach 525d sales (197ps, 400nm)

525d 145kW (was 130kW)
530d 170kW (no change)
535d 210kW (was 200kW)

The Comfort seats are definitely worth the extra money.

Yeah, don't touch the 520d in current auto form! Definitely go for a model with the updated 'box where the difference between manual and auto is marginal. The 520d engine is great but try the updated 525d (3 litre).

In September 520d does not only receive the updated 177ps engine but also the new automatic transmission. Worth waiting...
