I had the unfortunate experience of getting a heavy goods vehicle's tyre wrapped up in my near side front wheel.

I was doing 70mph on the motorway when the car in front suddenly pulls to the left leaving a bloody big tyre with no sidewalls in my direct way of passage. I could not move to either side due to other road users. I felt the initial 1st bump then nothing. At this point I was probably doing 10-15mph. I started to accelerate and the stearing failed to respond Then the second bump, at this point I had the unfortunate task of putting My E60 on to the hard shoulder. What a bloody mess one of them gets will make to your car. It ripped off My mudflap, practicaly the whole front wheel was covered in tar/rubber from the tyre. The front wing was out of alignment, the light cluster was also out of alignment and the support bracket broken. I had to spend a couple of hours removing all the tar from around the car.

If you see one of these things coming towards you steer well clear.

Sorry, no pics.

I was in such a hurry/panic to make sure she was OK I spent the first couple of hours on arraival at home dealing with the "carnage".

Luckily no lasting damage. (Apart from My nerves with little steering).

So all cleaned up now and no lasting damage or are the miscellaneous misaligned bits needing to be dealt with?...

I have the car booked in the garage on Thursday, so we'll see what they say.

Thanks for your concern.

In the U.S., they call them "alligator skins" because the tread pattern resembles the skin of an alligator. The trucks (lorrys) here are allowed to use retreaded / capped tires and the damn things peel off far too often. The truck drivers usually aren't even aware of it happening and just continue on down the road leaving a hazard for all that follow. My wife hit one with her minivan and it tore up the front bumper nicely. It's too bad that there isn't a way to trace the the things to their owners and make them liable for the damages they cause.

Tracing wouldn't be an issue using something like microdots, unfortunatly the cost involed probably means it would never be implimented.
