Well, we don't even have to look to the land of the rising sun for a closer comparison. The new Passat has 280hp and looks very competent with all the same gee-wiz features the 5 series is getting with DTC+. Car and Driver tested an automatic model this month and it did 0-60 in 5.9 seconds. Comes in AWD too. Quite nice.
Expensive nowadays though - $38,315 for a fully optioned non-4motion.

I also heard good things about the new Passat although I have not seen that article.
I still love BMWs, but if I were in the market for an AWD car, the Passat might beat out the 530xi. A $40K AWD sport pack Passat vs. $57K nicely equipped 530xi without a real sport pack (cosmetic only) seems like a good deal.
Has anyone driven a new Passat?

Car manufacture decide which Octane is better for their engins.
BMW recommend all of their cars use 91+ Octane, for 318 to 760.
Honda Accord has a 3.0L V6 rated 244HP using regular gas (87).
E60 has a 3.0L I6 rated 215/245 HP using premium gas (91).
Why? It's not that I don't want to pay extra for premium gas but it needs to be justified.

Good question... I can care less if I have to use premium or not, but the way I drive always at redline I would prefer to use premium and not have it ping. I would like to know too... whats the redline for honda's V6 and the redline for BMWs I6?
I've driven nothing but Honda/Acura since 1989. My '03 Acura CL Type-S 6-speed has a 3.2L 260hp VTEC V6; redline is 6900 rpm. As for the 3.0L VTEC V6 (redline 6300 rpm) in the Accord, hp is less due to its lower compression ratio which is below 10:1, hence the use of regular grade gasoline in the Accord V6. My CL runs 10.5:1 if memory serves me right, hence the use of supreme unleaded. Piston design is different as well. The Accord V6 uses a "dished" design for their piston heads (lower compression). The pistons in my CL are "domed" (higher compression). This affects compression ratio and the engine's octane needs. Honda and BMW make excellent engines and the technology behind them is outstanding. It's all what the manufacturer wants to achieve.

In Europe (with 98 octane gas) the engine data for a MY 2006 530i is
- 258 hp (190 kW) at 6600 rpm/min
- Torgue 300 Nm at 2500 rpm/min
- Compression 10,70 : 1
