Honda Accord has a 3.0L V6 rated 244HP using regular gas (87).
E60 has a 3.0L I6 rated 215/245 HP using premium gas (91).

Why? It's not that I don't want to pay extra for premium gas but it needs to be justified.

Actually the 3.0L I6 is rated from 215/255 not 245 hp but again I'm also curious just like you are.

Well, if you use regular (87 octane) in the BMW I6, you will definitly lose some horsepower and probably bring it in line with what the Honda V-Tech V6 rates at, e.g. approx. 245 hp.

Now, using lower grade octane will not necessarily harm the engine. The BMW Valvetronic system (in theory, anyway) will adjust for the lower octane. Using regular gas will simply reduce power.

(*Also, are the numbers quoted for the Honda V6 based on the new SAE formula for hp ratings?)

Good question... I can care less if I have to use premium or not, but the way I drive always at redline I would prefer to use premium and not have it ping. I would like to know too... whats the redline for honda's V6 and the redline for BMWs I6?

YEP...and i still find it truly amazing how a $50,000 German car can outrank a $25,000 Jap car with just better handling and chassis design. The Honda GPS is truly in a class of its own. My friend drives a V6 accord coupe and the thing is fast, but what astonishes me the most is the GPS. He can say stuff like "find nearest Japanese restaurant" or "nearest ATM" and the thing actually responds...too bad they cant make the car handle like a BMW would, otherwise BMW's wont sell anymore...

I think the E60 is in a different class compare with the Accord V6. You can't compare the two as these are two different car. Jap car will always be a Jap car, a BMW will always be a BMW and MB...will always be a piece of crap (Yes I don't like MB so don't try to change me) But if you have a CLK DTM than that's different.

Does it also find the nearest German restaurant on the Accord GPS.

The fact is V-Tec is pretty good technology. The S2000 still holds the record for hp/liter in a production car (without forced induction) I believe - something like 120 hp/liter. That would be a 360hp 3.0 liter....

It does seem to limit torque a bit more than valvetronic though.
