e60 or e91
E60 or E91? Which one? I currently drive E39 Touring, have 2 kids (8 and 10 years old). I need a car for daily commuting (cca 40km) and weekend trips (<200km). Overall <20.000km/year.
E60 - more space and more comfortable, less equipment
E91 - practical - Touring, smaller, less space but much sportier and fun (better sport seats...), cheaper - I could afford more equipment
I know this is E60 forum, anyway I appreciate any advise. Thanks.

Okram,
I have just been in a similar situation, going from an E46 Touring. Choice of the E91 or E60 (I would have liked an E61, but I am too miserable with money to fork out for one. Plus it is a BIG CAR). I have a dog and tow a caravan so the Touring is useful. However, I plumped for the E60, and I am glad I did. The ride quality in an E91 will be awful after an E39. Yes they are a little more "chuckable". My experience going from a 330d to a 530d is that the 530d is much, much quicker, more tractable, quieter, but is about 4-5 mpg worse on fuel. Swings and roundabouts, I know, but I wouldn't go back now. I know looks are a personal thing, but I think the E91 isn't as nice looking as either the E46 or the E60, particularly from the back. If you need a little more flexibility from an E60, make sure you get one with folding rear seats (not just the ski slot). Another thing to mention is that if you are currently running a six cylinder car, don't look at a 4 cylinder one. Yes, the four's are smooth, but they are not a patch on a six.

Bought my son an E91 great car... but it is not an E60. The room and ride of the E60 truly set it apart. If you like to toss the car around then spend a little extra and get the sports package. Well worth the money.

take both for a test drive in the dealer, like I did.
What persuaded me to go E60 than E90 was primarily, in this order
1. More room
2. More features as std
3. After 'negotiation' with the dealer, a 520D SE is within ?600 of a 320D SE - bit of a no brainer
4. Bigger 'pose factor' - a 5 says more on your drive than a 3.
cheers

I'm from the U.S. and can comment the touring. I had the E91 as loaner and it was a nice car. The loaner was very basic in options and had a economy feel to it. The interior room was tight but passable. But as a wagon, the jury is out in terms of utility. Its just a small car with really limited space for the rear passengers. In terms of go, it felt nimble with decent power. But after climbing back into my E60, I realized how much more comfortable the 5er was. Glad I'm driving the E60 with huge power and the sports package.
Given your comments I recommend the E60 in terms of space, particularly the rear seating for your kids. I just think the E90/91 is a two person car with emergency seats for 2 additional persons. As a wagon 3er is IMHO too small and only marginally useful for carrying things. Yeah, I'm a yank and we like bigger cars for the family. Go figure.
Just my two cents.

Get the facelifted E61 next spring.
The differance in price is nor that big (320dT vs. 520dT),
but the E60/61 gives you so much more (family)car.
Thanks guys for your (unonimous) opinion.
Actually, e61 is a bit expensive and could not afford many options. I think bmw is somehow boring with no options so I would rather go for more equiped e60.
Still interesting, I read somewhere that in terms of interior space e91 is actually same as my e39 and (can you imagine) has 460l trunk while e39 only has 410l. This was a reason I was having doubts.

Okram,
I know how you feel about the E61. As regards boot space. As with most things, there are Lies, Damned Lies and Statistics. The figures show that my old E46 Touring had the same size boot at my wife's Renault (can I say that on this forum????) Scenic. However, when it actually came to fitting things in, the Scenic was far, far better, and real-time was more useful for carting kids/dog/luggage etc - even before you threw out the seats. You need to eyeball the back. However, even though this is an E60 forum, the concensus is - get an E60. You won't be disappointed. (But get the fold down seats!)
