I also shopped around a bit recently and the quotes I got for trade in are pathetic. The car is exactly 18 months old, has less than 8000 miles on it and no one offered me more than $39,000, which is a depreciation of ~ $20,000 in 18 months! I didn't try to haggle too much.

Two non BMW dealers flat out told me they don't want an E60 as trade in, since thay are so full of problems.........

My Ride: I have a 2004 E60. It was registered in January 2004. It's a Black Sapphire 530i SE with a few options: - Auto-dim interior + folding exterior mirrors - Automatic gearbox - Bi-Xenon headlights - Bluetooth - Leather interior (Black-Dakota) - Navigation system - business - Service inclusive - Sport steering wheel - Star spoke 124 8Jx18"/9Jx18" + run flats - Top tint windscreen - BMW 6-CD autochanger - Supagard paint treatment - BMW carpet mats

The Porsche dealer has offered me far more in part exchange for the Cayman S! That's the irony of the whole situation. By the way, the car was ?40K new. Parkers Guide and Glass's guide (the detailed paid-for valuations) put the retail value at ?24.5K and the trade-in value at ?22.4K.

My car is almost 2 years old with 33,00o miles and I just bought it for ?24K.

I believe it would have cost about ?38K new given the various factory fitted options, but presumably the first owner would have negotiated some sort of discount of the list price.

What car have an excleeent depreciation index:

http://www.whatcar.com/depreciation-index.aspx

and the aa have an online valuation system based around glasses guide:

https://www.theaa.com/cbg/ManufacturerActio...y=fullValuation

I used these to help determine if the dealers prices were sensible. Given that I saw several 03 plate 530d's for ?25K I determined that the dealers charge whatever the think they can get away with. Likewise trade in values.

I bought my E60 from my local BMW dealer in late 2004. He reassured me that these cars are great value and as it was a 6-month old demonstrator, it had already lost around ?6K of its value so wouldn't lose money at the same rate as these cars don't depreciate too much. A couple of weeks ago I asked for a buy-back price just out of interest and he gave me a price that amounted to almost ?1000 per month depreciation over two years!

The car is two years old and is worth less than 50% of its cost price (according to the same dealer that I purchased it from). The depreciation on these cars is horrendous. Obviously selling privately I can get far more for it.
I bought an E60 in May 2005 and by jan 2006 BMW told me it was worth E17,000 less than what I had purchases it for initially. Thats nearly 3000 per month.

interesting......i leased my '05 530i April of '05 and currently has a "payoff" of about 49K. went by a dealer this past weekend looking at Lexus GX470 because for some reason i think i need to pay even more in gas.....or maybe it was the weather. anyway, dealer offered trade on my car for 47000 with paying 500 over invoice on the SUV. maybe there's some trunk money on '06's but not $8K??

I bought my 04 530i used (details below, w/ only 10K on it) in December 05 and pain $40K - original invoice price was $57K. So there - $17K depreciation over 20 month period - nearly $900 per month! Hope it will depreciate slower no that I own it (I wish!) :-)

Also, you bought the petrol, and they are never going to hold their value like the diesel will.
Very good point. My original plan was to buy a 1 yr old 530i which I could have got for about the same as a 2 yr old 530d!

After looking into it I was persuaded that, for the sort of driving I do, the 530d was the faster car.

Also as I expect to drive about 30,000 miles a year over the next 3 years, the extra fuel economy of the deisel will be the icing on the cake.

The other factor for me was that in the UK, the vast majority of 'older' 5's on the road are 3.0d's and I wanted to know that mine would still be 'sellable' in 1,2 or 3 years time.

All cars depriciate, and I bet the Cayman S will be just as bad.
I disagree - the Cayman will depreciate considerably less in the UK than the current E60. Porsche depreciation percentages especially for cars like the Boxster are very good indeed. Even the 911 holds up well.

Depreciation on BMW saloons in the UK is shocking - E60's are performing very poorly at the moment (worse than competitors like the E class, CLS and Lexus GS).

BMW are just knocking them out at discounts of upto 11%. Some of the magazine statistics havent caught up yet - for example What Car? reckon that a 530i will retain 60% (approx) of is value after 3 years !!!!

BMW 5 Series Saloon 550i SE 4dr

new: 43,550
1 Yr: 29,614 - 68%
2 Yr: 26,356 - 61%
3 yr: 23,194 - 53%
4 yr: 20,194 - 46%

Porsche Cayman Coupe 3.4 S 2dr

New: 43,930
1 Yr: 37,749 - 85%
2 Yr: 34,001 - 77%
3 Yr: 30,601 - 70%
4 Yr: 27,548 - 63%

Cayman beats 5 series for depreciation (530d depreciates a bit better than the 550, but is still 54% after 4 years)

BUT 5 series beats cayman on number of seats

Due to family issues I wanted to trade in my 2005 545i for a 2005/2006 Toyota Land Cruiser. I paid $63,000 for my car and when I went to trade it in, the trade value was $46,000 according to Kelly Blue Book. That hurts!!! My cars' depreciation value is more than my payment!!! Hopefully the depreciation value will slow down, from an investors perspective this might have been a bad investment. However, getting behind the wheel of her, makes me forget all about that!!! Now if I can convince the woman to have both!!!!
