What I never understood is why didn't BMW offer Digital read out display for the Driver and Passenger temp settings on the E60 like they did with the E39. Sometimes it is hard to see what temp setting i have picked by trying to look at those tiny little numers writen around the dails and are blocked sometimes from view due to the temp dail coming out so far from the dash to be able to grasp it. BMW should add blue and red markings around the dail, and display the temp setting on the lower screen of the iDrive display just like they do with the E65, or if not something more in the lines like the new E90 A/C display.

Taken from BMW TIS CD.
Detailed description for Diesel & Petrol, Basic and High (Advanced) Automatic air-conditioning systems.
Very useful to understand the way it works.

There is also a compete .pdf conversion, thanks to andy545 for downloading here.

IMHO this is an area where BMW have taken a huge backward step with the basic system and a leap too far forward with the advanced system. Having experienced both systems I found the basic system just too basic i.e. no quick front screen button, no quick max cold button, no rest function, no temp adjust in rear compartment and no dual zone temp. The advanced system has more functions than anyone really needs.

What I think we all really need is one system with digital readout, dual zone temp and the above quick functions. I.e. the old E39 system

I find it amazing that we have an I Drive screen but no graphics showing simple temp figures.

I bet we'll see it on future facelift models.

I totally agree with you Merv of the Derv I am sure the facelift models will have digital readout dual zone temp like on the E65 models. this was the only step back from the E39's A/C system.

Yes - over complex and not any better than the old version.

Incidentally, having red all of this, I still can't work out if there is any way to adjust the fan speed to the rear cabin outlet, independently of the main fan. Anybody know if this is possible ?

No I believe the only model from BMW that offers this is the 760Li. The BMW X5 rear airvents have a nob that adjust the fan speed but only when the main unit is on.

There is no separate fan in the rear! The rear airvents are just connected to the front fan.

If the front is set to cold and you set the rear to hot I take it no warm air is available to the rear vents!

Anyone tried this?
