Ok, this was a problem with the earliest of E60's with iDrive versions around v10 or v11. So this affects models built approximately up to the end of 2003 (or very early 2004) - so fairly few. (My suspicion is that only 'standard' aircon was affected)

The correct behaviour when hitting the AUTO button (on 'standard' aircon) is that the interior sensors modify the temperature, fan speed and which vents function totally automatically and continuously. One thing to bear in mind is that from cold the behaviour is restricted so that if hot air is required none is provided until the system has warmed up - no point delivering cold air in a cold environment! However, you may want to override that function to clear a misted up windscreen for example. (The 'advanced' aircon has a preset function for doing this amongst over features - remember to disable recirculation if you want to clear your interior windows if you have the 'standard' one)

With the buggy software (As mine was) the AUTO button does nothing useful at all! It totally ignores the requested temperature and I could be wrong but the AUTO function is not disabled when changing the direction or speed. The correct functionality means that the AUTO function is disabled if you manually adjust the direction or speed - the system is totally driven by the requested temperature when in AUTO. I know a lot of people moan about the standard aircon and its 'look' but when working correctly it does its job!

I can't remember the exact version that fixed it but I think it was v12 or one of the v13's. (From memory there was a number of v13.x's)

It's easy to test if you have the dodgy version. Warm the car up and then set the aircon to AUTO. Vary the temperature up and down and the fan speed should respond almost immediately. Then move either the direction or speed dial and the AUTO should turn off and the desired setting override.

As described above that is correct behaviour. It's not a 'preset' but it's software controlled depending on the interior sensor readings - however, it can't read your mind about the way you want it to work...

Yeah, as above it sometimes needs a 'helping hand'. I've been known to manually force the temperature to minimum and blast the speed up to increase cooling. (Hey, the 'advanced' aircon has a maximum cooling function....) Once feeling a bit cooler, enable the AUTO function and set the temperature...

In our black S-Max (large windscreen!) we got the 'IR' windscreen - it reflects most of the heat thus making the Aircons work easier, ultimately reducing fuel consumption and time to cool...

Sounds normal to me!

When i speak to the dealer and get updated info i will of course post
cheers once again

Yup, there is a software upgrade to fix this! This was a bug with the very early versions! (We're talking v11!!!)

The bit I don't get is 535i? (E39 only)

Thing is in the USA we do have a 535i E60... And it's gas not the oil burner. I think it is the N54 , TT 3.0 gas motor in it.
I thought in Europe the 535 was a "d" ( or whe ever BMW is calling a diesel) not an "i"

lol

Indeed! The OP made a typo...

In the UK the only 535 is the diesel as you state. Looks like the 535i won't turn up until the next 5-series ravamp in 2010...

The last 535i (V8) was available in the previous 5-series.

Good to see that the problem is getting fixed. Not sure that V25 is the latest current software version. Do a search in this excellent forum to check latest software version.

There you go, V11...

The 19 hours is a bit suspicious... Generally the process takes less than 6 hours but things can go wrong...

Just an update for you all, just returned from main dealer had software updated to V30!!! (so the techician thinks) which has cured my Auto Air problem completely now works as it should air flow and distribution now fully auto and if i change anything (except temp) it goes onto manual. IPhone now works as it should with full caller ID and perfect connection each time with or without WIFI on, reception better too although signal strength not showing(i have an early CCC but ive been told that it is using the fin) No IPod connections though which to be fair was a long shot but maybe in time. The software on iIPhone is 1.1.4.
I hope this helps and a big thank you to all who made posts, if i can assist anyone i will do my best

Cheers
