I have had problems with my 2005 545 Steptronic transmission since the day I purchased the car. The transmission alone is ruining my driving experience. I have had all of the CIP updates and it has been in the shop 6 times over the past 18 months and still can?t get rid of the SLAM and hesitation when accelerating from a rolling stop. Is anyone else still having this problem? :'( I think we need a support group for this.

This is the bulletin that I showed my service department when I had issues with the "Slam" issue.

They upgraded to 23.02 and this eliminated my eyebrows. This eyebrow issue has since been fixed with 24.00.

They also had a laptop sent to them from BMWNA to reprogram the transmission. This was back in December 2006. I had the "slam" one time after that and it's always at the same location/stop.

Hopefully this helps you.

Does anyone experience any actual loud banging noises when they get the transmission slam, or is it a more tactile sensation (in the seat of your pants). I've never heard a bang in the tranny per se, but I'm wondering if the take-off hesitation issue some of us are having is what others are referring to as transmission slam. If they are two distinct problems, it's possible that the take-off hesitation is BMW's "fix" to the slam issue.

One way or the other, I'll have to find a solution to both the take-off hesitation and the smooth stop issue before I will truly be able to enjoy this car. Has anybody had any luck correcting either of these problems?

Interesting if without the turbo. Or, in these sitautions, have the revs built up enough for the turbo to be operational?

It's transmission not turbo, the normally aspirated 545 and 550 suffer as well.

ZF acknowledge the 'feature' it is because the car stops in 2nd, tries to then take off in 2nd but the ''brain' realises the acceleration demand means it needs first. It then selects first and off you go, like a bat out of hell cause you kept pressing the gas waiting for something to happen.

The whole process creates a delay in moving off of around .5 to .9 of a second, but it seems like much longer.

Especially when pulling out into traffic, which at 60mph is covering 90 feet per second.

There is a big difference between pulling out when a car travelling at 60mph is 180 feet away and pulling out when it is 100ft away.

Entirely agree it's transmission and not turbo-related - the problem disappears by manually selecting 1st gear or (to a lesser extent) DS when stopping, but it's not exactly convenient. Especially since the so called manual mode is so nannied over that it's almost impossible to use.

It wasn't the cause rather the effect described as "ROCKET SHIP" which I find hard to relate to a non-turbocharged diesel - even in first gear and a 3-litre engine.
