Ewww......that does not sound well.

Whatever the cause it sounds deep. Most likely part of the reciprocating parts of the engine, ie crankshaft or pistons. Could be top end also meaning valvetrain.
Whatever..... you may have an oil pressure failure occurring.

Sounds like teardown time to see if it can be saved.

 

my first thought would be valvetrain, since the valve lift varies and controls idle and whatnot.
