E60 535d coolant loss and steamy start-up
Evening
My car has been drinking a bit of coolant for a month now, requiring a top-up about 3 weeks ago, again on Friday and yet again this evening. Each time I've had the cosmetic engine cover off and have inspected around all of the engine bay and can't see any escaping coolant. Since Friday the first start of the day has produced lots of white smoke, it does smell but I can't be sure if it's definitely diesel, oil or coolant. I'm guessing the two are linked?
My car has 109k miles, from what I've read so far is that head gasket failure is not so common on these six cylinder engines, and the turbo(s) were replaced around 70k (only verbally mentioned by the previous owner). I suspect the EGR cooler has developed a hairline crack internally, which is allowing coolant to enter the exhaust manifold when the engine is off and cooling down. Can anyone else think of other things worth checking?
Many thanks in advance.
