The rumour is that the M5 will get a stick option...

But for sure the torgue is the reason.
The new facelifted 535d will have about 600 Nm.

The car manufactures has to be on the safe side and have tolerances.

The Formula1 1,5 litre turbo engine had more than 1000 hp back in the '80's...

I for one don't think the 535d will get a manual. It would be too risky in reliability. 580 NM coming from the new uprated diesel king is quite alot and the main diference between this and most of the 3 liters manuals that were remaped to +600NM is the torque delivery. You can remap as much as u like a single turbo and it will not deliver at low rpms as the TT and that may be a problem with the manual gearbox since the torque curve is wider.

A manual box for the M5 (2007) in the American has been offically confirmed according to the British press (Autocar 16th November 2006) which must be a heavily beefed up version. Therefore it is a possiblity that a manual will be made available for the 535d in selected markets.

The M5 has 520 Nm. The 550i has 490 Nm. So I doubt that the reason for not using the current manual 6 speed is torque limits, as the box is rated at 550. Whether the M5 box will also be capable of holding 600+ (with an acceptable number of warranty claims - which is what it really boils down to), it remains to be seen. It certainly is possible mechanically, but most other manufacturers of luxury cars seem to go for auto (or sequential/DSG) when torque goes above a certain limit.

I know 2x 330cd with 300hp and 650nm. One of them made more than 100.000km with any problem.
Sorry, my friend, I don't believe that any 330d can really deliver 300 hp and 650 nm of torque. It's a fact that the standard manual gearbox is not designed to handle such a huge torque value and the same is for the clutch, that will worn out very quickly. In any case, unless those car receive plentiful of care and attention and a sort of preplanned, very costly and internsive, maintenance, there very few chances that such an overtuned engine will survive for long.

Dont really know why youd want a manual box on this car, such is the torque it only really needs 2 gears as it is...forwards and backwards Best leaving the auto to its own devices.

There's also not much engine braking from this engine so you're not going to gain much more control with a manual.

Officially yes.

But I have heard of BMW engines in the test benches with
both more hp and torgue of what is officially told.

Therefore, about 600 Nm for the new 535dA.

The new x35i N54B35 engine will be in this angle very interesting also...

Agree! With this much torque (and more to come) you indeed only have to put it in D and then step on the gas/wait for a second or so and then whooooosh off you go in an endless surge of acceleration. Overtaking is such a joke in those conditions
