Is it only our imagination that the E60 is any more problematic than previous 5 series (e.g. E39)?

I mean, for example, if there were rattles, computer glitches, brake squeaks, etc. on an E39, where would you go to vent to the general public? 6 or 7 years ago, bulletin boards and message boards were as common as a trouble-free, no-glitch E60 ( ), right?

Just food for thought.

Maybe the E60 isn't any worse than previous 5 series when it comes to problems and reliability, and any belief that it is worse is only a matter of perception.

I do not know much about the E39, but aren't the most of the E60 problems software related one???? I think so.... E39=not much software........therefore this pretty much answers your question

Don't know much about the e39, but I had five 3 series in a row before this car and they were completely reliable.

My e60 (so far) seems mechanically very sound, but IMHO the software is complete w*nk. It's like the entire car is run on a microsoft windows beta version.

But I tend not to care cause I didn't choose BMW for their programming skills.

I don't think they are any less relaible than pervious 5 series. Only BMW knows the answer for sure.

The power of internet and this forum is that we know someone has a problem on e60 even he is in different country. In the old day, the only information you get were from word of mouth.

I have had several BMWs over the years and all different models, so far my E60 is the best one of all. Time will tell of course, I only have 4600 miles. I think the 05 was better than the 04 and the 06 better than the 05 because of better software. If you want a problem free vehicle get a lexus. If you want a driving machine get a BMW. The sales manager at my dealer used to work for lexus for about 6 years, he told me the joke around that dealer was, they remove the problems and personality at the factory.

E39
1999 = 106 reported problems per 100 cars
2000 = 103
2001 = 113
2002 = 77
2003 = 77

E60
2004 = 113
2005 = 87
