My E60 550 is faster and has more maximum lateral grip than my E39 540i did.
My E39 was more fun to drive and, to me, better looking. Of course, its electronics and stereo can't hold a candle to my E60's.
One area where my E39 was far superior to my E60 was throttle response from a standing start. My E39 had instant thottle response and could easily smoke the tires from a start. My 550, with its stupid throttle by wire, suffers from throttle lag delay and does not feel as torquey from a start. But once rolling, my 550 is much much faster than my 540 was -- especially at highway speeds.
Both are great cars.

anything that is newer in this case in the shops now only E60, waiting for F10 that will take the crown (although it will be raw for the first year but then it should get better and better)

My previous biimmer is an E39 and what I miss most is the solid ride, better body fit( no squeeks and reattle). Styling wise, and technogy, I will go with my E60
