You're clearly (or conveniently) forgetting that the 545 has been timed at not that much over 5, the 550 is going to be quicker still. Haven't seen any serious 550 tests yet, but either way it will be close.
sure , but im quoting bmw's manufacturers time for the e39 m5

The M5 will win in the end. But it will be such a close race. VERY VERY CLOSE.
I for one pick the 550i and with some mods you can easiliy get the same hp numbers as the m5.

My Ride: E60 "Stripper" Now C6 "Stripper"
Exclamation

Our brother Wolverine has been saying this since day one, now that he's got an E60 M5...maybe he can race someone with an E39 M5 locally in Ohio for fun and some stats?

Don Juan have you invited anybody with an E39 M5 to race you?

Eh no, the E39 M5 did 0-100km/h in 5.3 s due to manufacturer.

Yup! 5.3 seconds and 5.5 for the 550i. 0-100km/h

I have to attest that it feels considerably quicker than 5.5 for the 550...I've yet to do tests - but when I get back to the states I will put down some hard nubmers. And to second someone else on this thread...I VOTED 550 WITH MY $$$$$$$

what do you guys think?
Car Weight Engine HP TQ
550 3803 4.8L 360@6300 360@3400
M5 4024 4.9L 394@6600 368@3800
the advantages of the 550 is early torque and lighter weight..so it maybe be a very close race up to 100 and maybe who knows what will happen then..ummm

M5 Any day. Those are paper stats, on the road the M5 would destroy the the 550!!!!
To be honest I suspect it would probably be pretty close. Logic favors the E39 M5 but power to weight is near identical as is torque.

I was about to say that's impossible! Then I realised your were talking about KPH, not MPH!

I have driven both and owned an e46 M3 for 3 years. I think the 550i may be deceptively fast as it is so smooth and comfortable compared to the M cars. My biggest concern with the 0-60 for the 550 is traction. When I hammer the pedal with the DSC off I start to smoke rubber. And sans a liimited slip differential I just don't think the start would be as good.

I also have observed that BMW tends to be conservative in 0-60 times except when it comes to M cars. I'm not sure why this is.

I'd rather have my current 545i over an E39 M5..... that's how much I love the E60 design.
