My Ride: 2003 X5 3.0----->gone
2004 Porsche Cayenne S : Gemballa front and back bodykit, fabspeed bypass pipes, Gemballa exhaust pipes, full option, 20" factory sport design rims------>gone
2005 545i 6-spd manual---->de-badged, CDV removal, Autosolutions short shift kit, resonator removal, premium package, PDC, xenon, almost full options, hardwire V1 install ....looking for mods...
2007 550i 6-spd----> Premium package, sport package, Logic7, heated everything, Rogue Engineering SSK, CDV removal, hardwire V1 install, aFe cold air intake, Custom Magnaflow exhaust....
I went to an M5 meet near my area with my 545 and surprisingly it kept on very well...545 is a whole new car...from 80-140....M5 wins obviously but not by far. But the interior of the M car loks very outdated in my opinion...

When considering my next ride, I seriously considered buying a 2003 e39 M5 that was on the lot at my local dealership. It was a great car obviously but I decided on a new e60 545i. I noticed a just a shade more punch on the M5 but not very much and not enough to care.

Has anyone here gone from an E39 M5 to an E60 545?
I currently have my lease expiring on my 2003 E39 M5 and since I will not be able to get a new M5 yet I was curious how the E60 545 stacks up to an E39 M5.
Any comments would be helpful.

I did compare the E39 540 to the E60 545. A side from the M5 having 75hp more (which with a few mods you can probably bring that closer to about 55hp) everything else is an improvement. Of course if you can wait for the 550, your hp difference would be minimal.
I was considering a used E39 540 as I really liked the style but the E60 has the following advantages:
- lighter
- quieter
- better ride and handling (I found the active roll gave a better highway ride without sacraficing handling)
- 25% more trunk room
- about 2" more rear leg room
- a bit wider
The downside is that an M is still an M! You will need to change out the exhaust on a 545/550 to give you the same sound and look.
