Has anyone here gone from an E39 M5 to an E60 545?

I currently have my lease expiring on my 2003 E39 M5 and since I will not be able to get a new M5 yet I was curious how the E60 545 stacks up to an E39 M5.

Any comments would be helpful.

Man i never drove an e39 M5 nor a e60 545i but my advice (what i would have done) is to keep the m5. An M is still an M and i think the 545i would come even near it. I always liked the e39 especially the M5 obviously and it still rocks in desgin if u ask me! Even now when the e60 is out on the streets and u ge to see it very often i still like the e39, even though the e60 looks better IMO. But no way the looks would make me change my e39 M5 over an e60 545. For an e60 M5 without a doubt, but as u said it that's another story....

Go drive an E60 545i and let us know what you think. Although the E39 M5 is a fantastic car, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with the E60 545 -- at least until you can get an E60 M5!

welcome mricorp

when does your lease actually expire?

...in case you arent aware, the E60 will get a new engine from the 750i making it the 550i in the fall, it will have ~367bhp, so if you can wait a few months, you may be plenty happy with this power until you go for the M5

I do agree with you to a certain extent BetterMakeWay, but the E60 is a whole new car. If you really ask me...its hard to compare an E39 M5 to an E60. The E60 has all new styling, technology, ergonomics, safety, etc. etc. compared to the E39. Yes, I give that an M is a M and nothing else should be compared with it...but the only thing that the old e39 M5 has an upper hand on is the power it produces .......other than that......????

I have driven the e39 M5 but I definitely suggest to go test drive the new e60 and you will see what I mean

BTW - get the 545i now and get on the waiting list for the new M5....you can enjoy the 545i until the M5 comes out (given that you have $$$$$ to spend )

Yeah i kinda agree. Though it isn't much to say because i never test drove a 545. My 535d it's on it's way to me. But even so i still consider an M an M and that's not all about power, it's about handling and about looks wich are quite impressive even now (luv those shadow wheels), and that M badge.
IMO you do extra costs for the swap just for the looks and a bit of more safety. The technology u are saying well....look at all the hicups on the forum about the idrive or cip software problems and so on. It's not like it's a bad car but untill i get my car all i can do is to bealive all those people that have tech problems and not only( door seals and so on...). I just hope it's not smth generalized and it's smth seldom. If money wouldn't be a problem, wich i suspect it's not the case because you would have gone straight to a e60 M5, then go for it.

So the best advice to you mricorp yeah take a test drive and then YOU decide what to do next! All you people don't even know how lucky you are because u live in such a developed countries. Where i live is quite hard to take a test drive especially with hardcore cars like M's. So in a way buyers here have to kinda buy being quite blind, not knowing to much about the car's handlings, real-performances, feel and so on. I rest my case...

Agree 100%

Yea, if you can test drive the car, then take advantage of it

Last year I sold my E39 M5 2000 and bought a 545iA with M suspension, AS and ARS, comfort seats etc..

I must say that the 545 is a much better car in almost all aspects. Better handling, better steering, better brakes, looks much more modern, much much more comfortable. It only lacks the raw punch of the E39 M5. Not a very big difference in performance, if you don?t drive a insane speeds ofcourse. My M5 was delimited and was doing well over 300 km/h on the speedo!!

But after 1 year with enjoyment with the 545 - back to the M brand.

I currently drive a M5 E60! And that is a completely different story

mricorp, most likely you will get 550 instead of 545, which will have almost same specs as E39 on stick (5.3-5.5 to 100kmh pretty real).
