I called the local BMW dealership and booked myself for a service as the service indicator has been going off in the last few days.
When the service advisor asked me if there's anything wrong with the vehicle other than a check up, I told her I've been noticing this howling noise when I turn the steering wheel at low speeds, usually occurs when I'm parking. The service advisor mentioned to me that my warranty expired earlier this month, and I'd have to pay at least 1 hour for a diagnositcs.
I recall reading on this forum that this howling noise is due to power steering fluid? Should I just tell them to check for this fluid, or should I go with the 1 hour diagnostics bs.
I bought extended warranty when I purchased the car last year, and thought it would cover stuff like this, but according to the service advisor, I have to pay out of my own pocket for this.
Suggestions?

If I were you..... I would have them replace the power steering fluid. If the noise comes back, then I'd do the diagnostics. How many miles do you have on your car?

So what was the resolution on this issue, with the steering noise at low speeds? I hear the same thing, and was wondering if changing the fluid fixed it, or it was more involved.

I get the same thing but only turning right/parking right. Sometimes I get the active steering de-activate light or the hydraulic fluid is low or whatever light. I top off with power steering fluid light, reset the active steering and it goes away. The howling noise goes away for a few days (3-5) then comes back again. I have yet to figure out the root of the problem.. :/
