Can somebody remind me ... what is the correct method to switch to "M" mode and have it stay there? if i hit a paddle, it changes to M, then changes back to D automatically after a few seconds. If i push the gear lever to the side, this engages D/S or whatever its called but keeps the car in auto mode. Do I then push a paddle whilst in D/S and it will stay in "M" until I knock the gear lever back to the side?

And then the sport button ... does this do much (e.g. is it worth pressing) if I am in manual mode using the paddles?

I've got all these extra options which I simply just don't use. For me, it's "D" and push the pedals. I'd like to play around with it a bit more

FWIW,

When I had my '06 330Xi, I found I had to use SD (or is it DS) for responsive driving. D felt sluggish by comparison, but I tended to use D in traffic as it was smoother in low speed, stop and go driving.

When I traded in the 330Xi for my 535Xi, I found the new car to be very responsive and surprisingly quick off the line in D, and for normal driving I don't feel the need to use SD like I did in the 330Xi. However, I have found that after I get rolling, say 40 mph, D can be a little sluggish when I want to step on the throttle and have the car respond quickly, so I switch to SD.

On the highway, I think SD keeps the car in 5th gear, or keeps it in 5th longer, while D will shift to 6th.

On both my wife's e46 and my e60 I always drive in DS mode. Much quicker response, especially in the e46.
Do we get sharper throttle response in DS mode? (i just noticed it in manual mode)
and i cant feel any throttle response differences in D and DS at all. (maybe just my problem!)

I got my LCI 525i 218 hp for a couple of weeks now
first 500 kms i did regular D driving,i felt the first gear in the automatic didnt have enough power...
then i tried the M mode i streptonic and the drive improved immensely,i love this now!

and today i tried DS and i must say i was really impressed with the ride and the comfort of it

anyone else want to share their experience friends? how do you normally handle your car regular D,DS or M mode??

Mike
Hi Mike,

I usually drive my 550 on DS mode. I only switch to steptronic mode when I decide to teach someone a lesson- this is when you want to get a full BMW power

If you hit the sport button and then move the shift lever sideways into manual mode, the car will allow you to manually shift in the most robust manner and not slip back into automatic mode.

Russ, to use M mode on the SAT, you do need to move the gear selector over to the left and manually shift one time to make it stay there. Since I use M mode all the time, before I drive off, I just move the lever over to the left and then up (as if I'm downshifting) to put the car into M1. The sport button makes a big difference in the shift times and a smaller difference in some other things. Again, I pretty much always use manual mode with the sport button pressed. To me, if the sport button/mode isn't activated, the car feels funny to me since I'm used to how if feels with it on...
