I've been switching from DS to D on the fly for years. First in my E39 and now in the E60. I don't think there is any effect except increasing the fun factor.

My Ride: 2005 525i Titanium Silver Metalic and 2003 325xi Jet Black with the Premium Package in both cars.
I also switch from D to DS on the fly without any problems. I basically drive is DS all the time except when in heavy traffic.
