Beating Penetta (and others) to the question, so then how would the 535i stack up to the M5 in your back-to-back?! Maybe a race of a tuned 535i and an M5 is in the works.
Which car had more torque for around town driving? I suspect the 550i would be equal to the M5 up to 5000RPM. I haven't had the chance to drive a new M5 myself. I didn't want to be tempted to go with that $800 a month difference.

Was the handling much different?

.....and I have to say that I kind of liked the 550i. My main complaint with the M5 was the over boosted steering. Same thing with my M3 convertible, the steering is so over assisted and effortless that it borders on annoying. I liked the feel of the 550i steering a lot more. I don't know, for the extra $800 a month (that's right) I just don't think it's worth it. One thing that I absolutely LOVED were the active seats. Were so cool but again, not worth the difference in price.
You know you can get active seats in a 550.

Anyway, like I always said, the 2008 550i sport is a great car, far superior to a 535i and now you say equal or better than an M5. Great News! I no longer will feel sad when I see an M5 go by!

But, again, is always about the money, in my calculations, an M5 would cost me aprox. $500 more a month than my 550i and is out of my budget (Mmm, maybe if I was single and did not have a wife who loved mercedes convertibles and two sons who like BMW's, heck! I would probably have the 2008 550 and the mercedes convertible and the two 325's anyway)

Again, the usual disclaimer, no offense intended for 535 owners, your cars are great too.

Hummmmm......how did a 535 get into a 550 vs M5 conversation.

You might want to read the April issue of "Bimmer" which has a 550i vs M5 comparison article.

BTW, although you could likely care less, IMO the 535 is a great car as one can get the xDrive system which is not available in NA in any V8 or V10 car. If you lived where I live, you might feel differently than you do. "Better" means different things to different people. It is MUCH more important to me to be able to drive safely every day of the year, in all conditions, than it is to get to 60 about 2 or 3/10ths of second quicker. YMMV.

I never considered an X drive car because it is not available with a V8 and also lacks ARS which is huge. I have 4 Dunlop Winter M3 tires and have absolutely no trouble going through anything in winter. I was actually kind of shocked by how well they perform.
