I got this light the same day I got my active steering error and my servotronic error. I took it to dealership and they said nothing was wrong, that the system lost calibration for some reason and just needed to be recalibrated.

I bought my car as a CPO so I got the extended warranty which I have used a few times now due to electronical errors. If you ask me I would get the extended warranty not because of the mechanics of the vehicle but because of all the electronical things in the car.
+1
I just had my 04 E60 in for the third time for this issue. Dealer found nothing, my SA had the data sent via PUMA. BMW came back and said they see errors in the Active Steering Angle Sensor, it was changed and the Car Firmware updated for the 4th time since I have had it.
You want the warranty for the electronics and auto trans (if so equipped)

I had the same error come up like this, I took it to the dealership and they diagnosed it as a bad DSC control unit, they wanted $4k to replace it....I drove it home that day and declined the repairs at the time. On the way home I had the car stall on me once. I almost crapped my pants, thinking more to add to the problem. I got an estimate from an independent BMW shop that I heard good things about from bimmerforums.com and they said they could do the job for $2700. So I took it there, they ended up changing my battery because they said it seemed like it couldn't hold a charge. Now no more problem. So it went to a $500 bill, which was battery plus new rear brakes and diagnostic tests. I was happy to pay that. No problems since... *knock on wood* I don't know if my problem is common though. Glad it turned out to just be the battery though.
