I was able to survive last winter in with my car on my Dunlop summer tires for the 1st couple snow storms in NJ. After that I picked up a set of Michelin Snow tires and they helped. Only issues are going up driveways and inclines. BTW I bought a 4x4 pickup a couple months ago for work reasons and I'll probably be driving that when it snows.
I would recommend buying beater 4x4. It's just the convenience a comfort of knowing you can drive anywhere and not worrying about it. In NJ they do a good job at clearing out the streets but if you have 2 feet of snow on the ground and need to leave the house in an emergency, your not going anywhere in any rwd car.

Yeah ok but what if you live where there are hills and steep inclines. No matter what tire you have if the road has alot of snow rear wheel drive sucks ass!!!!! Front wheel drive is much easier to maneuver.

I repeat; You have to know how to drive in snow.
Sure if there's a feet of fresh snow on the road I wouldn't drive on it, but I wouldn't drive on it with a FWD car either then. Otherwise, snowy and icy roads are as driveable with RWD as they are with FWD cars, no matter how hilly the terrain is.

I just wish a little more communication between us (Eric & I)...
As for the original question, I suggest you (matttytn2) check the www.camskill.co.uk for a set of winter tyres. You probably don't need studs so I think you should have a nice range of tyres to choose from. The difference will be like a night&day and you can enjoy your beautiful BMW at winter time too!

Here in Denver, CO we get a fair amount of snow throughout the winter. I was a little skeptical at how the 550i would handle. With summer tires on you don?t stand a chance. Invest in a good set of snow and ice tires and the car handles amazingly well.
I agree with Antti, it really comes down to knowing how to drive in the snow. Four wheel drive doesn?t equal four wheel stop!
