It seems to me from talking to fellow e60 owners when it snows these cars are damn near useless. is it worth me getting snow chains? do they work? is there anything else i can do to stay mobile or shall i buy this 4x4 scooby for winter i have my eye on... i would rather spend that money on more mods tho

I have snow in my area, but not a high amount that my sport suspension couldn't clear it. I do fine with Bridgestone Blizzak WS snow and ice tires. I have a inclined driveway at home that my RWD E60 Sport can handle in the ice better than my FWD minivan does on all-seasons.

If you have a lot of snow in your area, snow tires / chains are useless if your vehicle ground clearance cannot clear the fluffy snow.

I wouldn't have thought that you would see enough snow in Northants. to make chains viable. They're only really good for snow packed roads. Once you're out of the side streets the chains would cause more damage than good.

A good set of winter tyres should sort you out. Once it dips below about 7 degrees, you will find that your standard tyres get rather rigid and lose grip quite rapidly. Winter tyres combined with careful use of your torque should sort you out. If you're worried about getting stuck, keep a couple strips of old carpet in the boot for added traction.

That is complete BS.
You just have to get a nice set of winter tyres and learn to drive in snow.

This kind of thinking is exactly why EVERY car manufacturer is pumping out AWD models.

+1000000. Winter tires (Blizzaks in my case) and some common sense go a long way.

+10000 I grew up in Colorado where it snows and when I first started driving I had a series of RWD cars, even an old Monte Carlo - if I can learn to drive in snow in an old muscle car then you can learn to do it in an E60. It isn't hard, it is more about focus and maintaining sane speed for the conditions than the car you're driving.

My 545 with dedicated winter tire is much better in the snow than my old volvo ever was.
