Sorry for such a newbie question, but does driving in DS or M long term affect the transmission or engine in anyway?..with all that high rpms its capable of....
Sad to see that no one answered this yet, because I was just thinking about this same thing this morning. I am a newbie here and newbie with my E60 (3 weeks), and I just love the smooth feel of DS mode when I am doing the morning drive on surface streets until I get out on the freeway then I switch back to D once I am up to speed in traffic. Just this morning I was thinking the same thing, am I putting appreciably more wear and tear on this car by driving in DS 10-20% of the time when I am in town?

I am not running high RPM's but I just wondered what effect I might be having. I too plan on keeping this car for a lot of miles, and I put about 40,000 a year or more on there, so I want to make sure I am doing the right thing.

Again pardon the newbie, but from my understanding what DS is doing vs. D is changing in the computer where the shift points are as far as RPM and also allowing it to stay in the lower gear a little longer after you level out the RPM curve at a given point. Is this a pretty accurate description of what is going on?

Driving in MS or M affects the transmission? I highly doubt that, as most of the shifting is controlled by the computer anyways so you dont damage anything.

I am on the same page. My driving looks like:

D: 70%
DS: 30%

but when im in the city i drive on DS 90% of the time i love how the caqr picks up ans decelerating byitself always keeping int "ready" to kick.

my understanding is that the only disadvantage is bad MPG. Can anyone prove that it wears the engine/transmission faster?

For me, generally D. Almost never M. Occasionally DS, when I want to hoot around a little. I suspect I drive mine a little less aggressively than a lot of you guys do.

By the way - I used to have an X5 3.0. I drove it around in DS all of the time - that car did not have a sixth gear for the DS to ignore, and I felt that the differences in shift points were trivial. It was just a little different feel.

With the 545, DS feels like a whole different car than D to me. Substantially more aggressive than D.

I could never get used to the push-pull orientation on the M setting. On my X5, it was the opposite as it is in the 545, and for me that felt more intuitive.

Simple, determine the number of miles you drive -- 1-way -- divide that by the number of times you shift between the different modes, then subtract the time that it took for that 1-way trip. It's simple mathematics -- oh forgot to mention that it requires a special quadratic-equation where X is set to the 2nd power when performing the full round-trip BTW.

My calculation equates to:
DS=97%
D=2.8%
M=.2%

SB increases the factor ! No HP increase ... but it sure feels good. DS almost feels reckless even with a 6 cyl Auto / xi
