Drivers outside door handle not working

The out side handle on the drivers door lifts up as usual but nothing happens. The door can be opened from the inside still. We live on an Island making it hard to get the car to a dealer, so wouldn't mind if anybody has had this problem and can talk me through the fix. Thanks Tom
