Theres no problem. thats how its designed to work... Listen to Rudy everyone. and just as a note... for SMG if I'm in D and I open the door it will automatically shift into N or if I'm in N and try to shift to D with the door open it'll look at me and laugh.

I haven't tried it myself but I think the trick to being able to back up with the door open is to simply keep one foot on the brake pedal and the transmission will not go into park...

I stand corrected. As long as I maintained slight pressure against the brakes the car would move both forward and backward with the door open, I moved the car several feet this way in both directions. Once completely off the brake the interlock engaged. My apologies.
