Theres no problem. thats how its designed to work... Listen to Rudy everyone. and just as a note... for SMG if I'm in D and I open the door it will automatically shift into N or if I'm in N and try to shift to D with the door open it'll look at me and laugh.

The interlock does exist so either you're not letting off the brake completely or there is something wrong with your car.
I haven't tried it myself but I think the trick to being able to back up with the door open is to simply keep one foot on the brake pedal and the transmission will not go into park...
