Drivers door interlock?
#1
Hi I have a new 08 535i and of course it has the electonic shift handle to put it in drive. The other day I was moving the car in my driveway and had the drivers door open as I was just moving it a few feet. Well I placed the shifter to drive and the car tried to move forward but wouldn't. It was like there were chocks in front of the tires. I tried several times and it wouldn't budge. I have since read on forums where these shifters in the 08's are causing some problems and called the dealer to inquire. He said there is a safety feature built in where if the drivers door is open the car won't move. I have glanced through the manual and can't find anything on that. Anyone else experience this or is this true that the car has an interlock for the door being open? Thanks, Bill

Either your dealer is full of crap or there is a problem with MY 08 535i.
Car running and in P, opened the driver's door then shifted into D (Parking brake was off). The car immeidately rolled forward and an alert popped up on the HUD.
I've never heard of a door interlock before. If the problem occurs again, I'd take it back to the dealer to get it checked out. Bring the b/s flag with you if the cite the "door interlock"....better yet, have em demonstrate it for you.

Same annoying paternalistic thinking that makes it impossible to move between N and D in a traffic jam without ticking your brakes. up to 10 (?) KM/h it requires that.
however, I have a normal (pre LCI, just 6 gears and a S +/-) automatic gearbox and I can move with the door open. It does dingdong while doing that though.

I haven't tried it myself but I think the trick to being able to back up with the door open is to simply keep one foot on the brake pedal and the transmission will not go into park...

OK I went out and tried it again and here is what happened. I had car running in park, opened the door, selected drive and the car rolled about a foot and it locked up. The shifter said park. It was like slamming the car in park while moving. It was abrupt. Closed the door and it worked perfectly. There must be something telling the computer the door is open. I'm going reread the owners manual again. Bill

The interlock does exist so either you're not letting off the brake completely or there is something wrong with your car.

I think you're on to something. I will try it with leaving my foot on the brake tomorrow.
