Drive Control System Malfunction

My Ride: MY06 Silver-Grey 530i, Grey Leather, Sports Package, Steptronic, Premium Package, Satellite Radio, Bluetooth (Motorola V551), Llumar Platinum Tint.
I could use a little advise from the forum. Today I noticed DSC was off when I pulled out of the driveway. 
I simply started the car, waited a few moments then put the car in reverse. The chime came on alerting me that DSC was not activated. When I checked IDrive it indicated that the DSC has failed and recommended that the car needs service. 
I want to know how safe is it to drive the car at highway speeds without DSC? Has anyone else experienced this failure? What is the general diagnosis and can it be corrected?

My DSC just went out also. The steering became harder. Brought the car to the dealer but the replacement module is back-ordered for a week. They'll replace it for free, and they took the car in and gave me a loaner. Dealer said the DCS modules are going out at a high rate on the 5-series and M5.
