I am posting this in the E60 Discussion forum because the E61 forum is on vacation. Or something.

I have a 2005 530d (160kW) that I have owned since last November. It is the first diesel BMW that I have owned with the evil DPF - my 2001 320d Touring did not have one.

Lately, the DPF seems to be in "cleaning mode" every 200km or so and it is annoying as hell. Not only that, but it smells! WTF?

Is this normal for a car that only has 76,000km on the dial? If any other diesel owners have noticed anything strange about their DPF, please chime in.

And tell me if it is Ok to remove the damn thing...

What is cleaning mode and what smell do you get? I am not sure about DPFs as this is my first car but I thought it was there to help the environment. Why is it evil?

cheers

It is strange. No clue about the weather effect, but it could have something to do with this.

If I drive a bit faster than the law allows for a fair distance (+150km), it does NOT do this cleaning routine. But with a lot of stop and go driving, cleaning mode goes on every third day.

The smell almost reminds me of "burnt clutch" oder.

Sounds like another visit to BMW is in order...

I've had my 530D for 6 months and can't say I've noticed anything to suggest a DPF cleaning cycle is happening
What are the signs?

You will hear the sound; it is like your muffler has fallen off. It is a low sounding growl, regardless of what gear you are in.

I have not experienced anything like that, but then I don't have even 10 k km's on my car,
and it's not a 530d.

But don't remove it, a visit to the dealers sounds better.

Good luck.

I have had mine replaced just recently under warranty, i had a couple of instancies when i could smell burning oil and there was a little bit of smoke at the rear of the engine block, so i put into BMW for this and they replaced a breather pipe, 2 weeks later it was back again, so back to dealer and they replaced something else all ok, 2/3 weeks later same thing so left with dealers for 2 weeks while i was in USA and they e-mailed me to say that the DPF was partialy bocked so they replaced it... good cause they said it is about ?1500!!

Here is some discussion about this topic http://www.btcf.fi/forum/showthread.php?t=...p;highlight=dpf For Finnish speakers only
A few guys has done it with no probs. I'm going to remove mine soon. I barely notice it DPF is cleaned and certainly no smells, no noice or anything.
How can you smell it while you are driving
